NEW LIFE, MAGIC, IMAGINATION
Open to the public – Required attendance for all students.
May Day is a Northern Hemisphere festival. It is an ancient tradition of celebrating the arrival of summer and the return of spring – the rebirth and growth of new plant life, the lengthening of the day light hours, and the strengthening force of the sun.
Known as Beltane in Celtic lands, and celebrated by the Romans recognizing the goddess Flora, May Day is a popular tradition. The May Pole Dance is a joyful experience, and often the center of the May Day celebration. The May Pole often bears garlands and symbolizes the tree of life and growth of spring vegetation. This festival is celebrated as an entire school community. Children from each grade take turns doing a May Pole dance. The patterns get more complicated as the children mature.
May faire is a joyful event for the entire family. Visitors can enjoy various vendors and artisans, games and crafts, organic food and a silent auction.
Symbolism: Flowers. Crowns. Dressed in white. Colored Ribbons. May Pole Dance.
Song:
Here we go round the Maypole high,
The Maypole high,
The Maypole high,
Here we go round the Maypole high,
Let colored ribbons fly,
Let colored ribbons fly.
See lasses and lads go tripping by,
Go tripping by,
Go tripping by,
See lasses and lads go tripping by,
Let colored ribbons fly,
Let colored ribbons fly.
In rainbow hues make garlands gay,
Make garlands gay,
Make garlands gay,
In rainbow hues make garlands gay,
Let colored ribbons fly,
Let colored ribbons fly.
