On Friday, December 13, our school will celebrate the festival of Santa Lucia. Santa Lucia is a Scandinavian festival of lights, where candles brighten the dark days of winter and where we celebrate the life of Saint Lucia, an Italian saint known for her kindness and love. Santa Lucia, whose name comes from the Latin word “lux” meaning "light," also links this celebration with the days growing longer after the winter solstice.
For this festival, our 2nd grade students all dress in white with a red sash. The oldest 2nd grade girl dresses as Santa Lucia and wears a crown of greens and candles. Then they begin a procession, visiting each class singing Lucia songs and delivering baked bread – a traditional Santa Lucia day treat. This event occurs during school hours.
